Am 02.07.2025 hat Herr Dr. Oleg Dik mit seinem Habilitationsvortrag sein Habilitationsprojekt erfolgreich abgeschlossen und damit die Venia legendi für das Fach Religionswissenschaft und Interkulturelle Theologie erworben.
Seine Habilitationsschrift trägt den Titel Worship or Suicide. On the Paradox between Religion & Society und wird im Herbst 2025 als Buch erscheinen. Habilitation successfully completed
On July 2, 2025, Dr. Oleg Dik successfully completed his habilitation project with his habilitation presentation, thus earning the venia legendi for the subject of Religious Studies and Intercultural Theology.
His habilitation thesis is titled „Worship or Suicide: On the Paradox between Religion & Society“ and will be published as a book in fall 2025. The RIT team at the Kirchliche Hochschule Wuppertal warmly congratulates him on receiving the title of Privatdozent (PD) for Religious Studies and Intercultural Theology.
Congratulations to Maher Samuel on the successful defense of his doctoral thesis on June 18, 2025, and thus on being awarded the title “Dr. phil.” by the University of Wuppertal. This marks the end of three years of fruitful cooperation and opens up new perspectives. May God bless him and his ministry. His thesis: „On the Roots of Religious Sectarianism and the Quest for an Authentic Dialogue in a New Cultural Space. The Egyptian Case“ will appear in September 2025.

From March 21-23, 2025, a block seminar on „Interreligious Dialogue“ was held for the third time at the Academy World Mission (AWM) in Korntal, with more than 30 participants. It was organized as a cooperation between the Protestant University Wuppertal, the Internationale Hochschule Liebenzell (IHL), and the AWM. The special profile of the event once again consisted of a combination of academic lectures (Dr. Yassir Eric, Dr. Friedmann Eißler, Prof. Dr. Detlef Hiller, Prof. Dr. Tobias Schuckert, Prof. Dr. Henning Wrogemann), interreligious and intercultural encounters (DITIB Mosque Sindelfingen), practical elements (Selam Bruk), and an open space for theological questions and spiritual life.

On September 12, 2024, an interfaith dialogue event organized by The International Leadership Training Institute (TILTI) took place in Islamabad (Pakistan). Under the topic „Interfaith Dialogue: Understanding Christianity & Islam (Past, Present & Future)“ Prof. Dr. Navid Jamal Malik (University of Sialkot), Dr. Mufti Anas Rizwan (International Islamic University, Islamabad) and Dr. Muhammad Babur (Exploring Leadership & Learning Theories in Asia) discussed with the Christian representatives Prof. Dr. Detlef Hiller (Internationale Hochschule Liebenzell, IHL) and Prof. Dr. Henning Wrogemann (Wuppertal Church University).
In addition to fundamental perspectives on Islamic and Christian understandings of dialogue, a number of current questions about Christian-Islamic relations in Pakistan were discussed, with the audience of 40 people from various Christian churches and Muslim organizations providing a number of constructive contributions and critical questions. As organizer, Dr. James Liton (founder of TILTI) concluded by emphasizing the importance of Interfaith Dialogue events for the future of Pakistan, as in this way, in addition to important discussions, personal contacts can be made and good relationships can be developed.

Neben grundsätzlichen Sichtweisen zu islamischen wie christlichen Dialogverständnissen wurde eine Reihe aktueller Fragen zu christlich-islamischen Beziehungen in Pakistan diskutiert, wozu es aus dem Auditorium von 40 Personen verschiedener christlicher Kirchen wie muslimischer Organisationen eine Reihe von konstruktiven Beiträgen und kritischen Rückfragen gab. International Study Program 2024
Im Sommersemester 2024 (April bis Juli) findet an der Protestant University Wuppertal in Kooperation mit der Vereinten Evangelischen Mission (VEM) zum dritten Mal ein International Study Program statt: Sechs Studierende aus Afrika (Tanzania, Ruanda) und Asien (Indonesien, Philippinen, Hongkong) und deutsche Studierende werden an insgesamt 6 englischsprachigen Lehrveranstaltungen teilnehmen. Das Thema lautet: „War and Peace as a Theological and Ecumenical Challenge for the Church“. In einem umfangreichen Exposure-Program werden die Teilnehmenden deutsche kirchliche, diakonische und gesellschaftliche Zusammenhänge kennenlernen und diskutieren.
Das Programm ist ein Beispiel für die Besonderheit der Kirchlichen Hochschule Wuppertal als einer theologischen Fakultät, die (über Forschung und Lehre hinaus) in besonderer Weise durch ihre Campus-Situation, ihrer Nähe zu kirchlichen Lebenswelten in Deutschland und der weltweiten Ökumene und ihrer engen Kooperation mit Organisationen wie der Vereinten Evangelischen Mission (VEM) Theologie, kritische Reflexion, geistliches Leben und ökumenische Gemeinschaft miteinander verbindet.
International Study Program 2024, Wuppertal, Germany – Protestant University Wuppertal & United Evangelical Mission In the summer semester of 2024 (April to July), an International Study Program is taking place for the third time at the Protestant University Wuppertal in cooperation with United Evangelical Mission: six students from Africa (Tanzania, Rwanda) and Asia (Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong) along with German students will take part in a total of 5 courses (Old Testament, Systematic Theology, Practical Theology, Ecumenics, Intercultural Theology) taught in English. The theme is: “War and Peace as a Theological and Ecumenical Challenge for the Church”. In an additional extensive exposure program, participants will get to know and discuss German church, diaconal and social contexts. The program is an example of the special nature of the Protestant University of Wuppertal as a theological faculty that is unique (beyond research and teaching) through its campus situation, its proximity to church life in Germany and global ecumenism, and its close cooperation with Organizations such as the United Evangelical Mission (UEM), as it combines theology, critical reflection, spiritual life and ecumenical community.
Blockseminar als akademische Kooperation von KiHo Wuppertal, IHL und AWM
Vom 16.-18. Juni 2023 fand an der Akademie Welt Mission in Korntal (bei Stuttgart) ein Blockseminar zum Thema „Interreligiöser Dialog“ statt, das durch Dozenten dreier theologischer Ausbildungsstätten als akademische Kooperation durchgeführt wurde. Insgesamt 16 Studenten/innen und 4 Doktoranden/innen der Kirchlichen Hochschule Wuppertal und der Internationalen Hochschule Liebenzell erhielten die Möglichkeit, nicht nur theoretische Grundlagen christlich-muslimischer Beziehungen zu reflektieren, sondern auch in direkter Begegnung beim Besuch einer Moschee in Sindelfingen Erfahrungen zu sammeln und im Austausch mit Praktikern des christlich-islamischen Dialogs zu treten.

Der Schwerpunkt lag darauf, die real existierenden Bedingungen in Ländern etwa des Nahen Ostens oder Pakistans in den Blick zu nehmen, um ein tieferes Verständnis für die Herausforderungen, die sich mittelbar auch in deutschen Kontexten stellen, zu entwickeln.

International Study Program 2024, Wuppertal, Germany – Protestant University Wuppertal & United Evangelical Mission In the summer semester of 2024 (April to July), an International Study Program is taking place for the third time at the Protestant University Wuppertal in cooperation with United Evangelical Mission: six students from Africa (Tanzania, Rwanda) and Asia (Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong) along with German students will take part in a total of 5 courses (Old Testament, Systematic Theology, Practical Theology, Ecumenics, Intercultural Theology) taught in English. The theme is: “War and Peace as a Theological and Ecumenical Challenge for the Church”. In an additional extensive exposure program, participants will get to know and discuss German church, diaconal and social contexts. The program is an example of the special nature of the Protestant University of Wuppertal as a theological faculty that is unique (beyond research and teaching) through its campus situation, its proximity to church life in Germany and global ecumenism, and its close cooperation with Organizations such as the United Evangelical Mission (UEM), as it combines theology, critical reflection, spiritual life and ecumenical community.

On September 12, 2024, an interfaith dialogue event organized by The International Leadership Training Institute (TILTI) took place in Islamabad (Pakistan). Under the topic „Interfaith Dialogue: Understanding Christianity & Islam (Past, Present & Future)“ Prof. Dr. Navid Jamal Malik (University of Sialkot), Dr. Mufti Anas Rizwan (International Islamic University, Islamabad) and Dr. Muhammad Babur (Exploring Leadership & Learning Theories in Asia) discussed with the Christian representatives Prof. Dr. Detlef Hiller (Internationale Hochschule Liebenzell, IHL) and Prof. Dr. Henning Wrogemann (Wuppertal Church University).
In addition to fundamental perspectives on Islamic and Christian understandings of dialogue, a number of current questions about Christian-Islamic relations in Pakistan were discussed, with the audience of 40 people from various Christian churches and Muslim organizations providing a number of constructive contributions and critical questions. As organizer, Dr. James Liton (founder of TILTI) concluded by emphasizing the importance of Interfaith Dialogue events for the future of Pakistan, as in this way, in addition to important discussions, personal contacts can be made and good relationships can be developed.

Neben grundsätzlichen Sichtweisen zu islamischen wie christlichen Dialogverständnissen wurde eine Reihe aktueller Fragen zu christlich-islamischen Beziehungen in Pakistan diskutiert, wozu es aus dem Auditorium von 40 Personen verschiedener christlicher Kirchen wie muslimischer Organisationen eine Reihe von konstruktiven Beiträgen und kritischen Rückfragen gab. Als Veranstalter hob Dr. James Liton (Gründer von TILTI) abschließend die Bedeutung von Veranstaltungen zu Interfaith Dialogue für die Zukunft Pakistans hervor, da auf dieser Weise neben den wichtigen Diskussionen auch persönliche Kontakte geknüpft und gute Beziehungen entwickelt werden können.

Intercultural Theology – Volume One

Christianity is not only a global but also an intercultural phenomenon. The diversity of world Christianity is evident not merely outside our borders but even within our own neighborhoods.
Over the past half century theologians and missiologists have addressed this reality by developing local and contextual theologies and by exploring issues like contextualization, inculturation, and translation. In recent years these various trajectories have coalesced into a new field called intercultural theology. Bringing together missiology, religious studies, social science research, and Christian theology, the field of intercultural theology is a fresh attempt to rethink the discipline of theology in light of the diversity and pluriformity of Christianity today.
Henning Wrogemann, one of the leading missiologists and scholars of religion in Europe, has written the most comprehensive textbook on the subject of Christianity and culture today. In three volumes his Intercultural Theology provides an exhaustive account of the history, theory, and practice of Christian mission. Volume one introduces the concepts of culture and context, volume two surveys theologies of mission both past and present, and volume three explores theologies of religion and interreligious relationships.
In this first volume on intercultural hermeneutics, Wrogemann introduces the term „intercultural theology“ and investigates what it means to understand another cultural context. In addition to surveying different hermeneutical theories and concepts of culture, he assesses how intercultural understanding has taken place throughout the history of Christian mission. Wrogemann also provides an extensive discussion of contextual theologies with a special focus on African theologies.

Reading a Century of German Mission Theology

The gospel is for every tribe, tongue, and nation (Revelation 7:9), but there is no single biblical or theological model for the relationship between the gospel and these diverse cultures. Indeed, every suggested approach carries its own range of philosophical and theological commitments that all too often remain unexamined. Contextualization is fraught with challenges—yet wrestling with questions of context is essential for how we understand mission, theology, and the embodiment of the Christian faith.
German missiology has engaged these questions in a variety of ways that can both inform and critique Anglo-American traditions. In this compilation and analysis, John Flett and Henning Wrogemann translate and comment on a core thread of German missiological works, explaining both their historical and current significance. Drawn from journals and books across a century of academic discourse, these classic writings trace developments from Gustav Warneck, the father of contemporary missiology, through key thinkers such as Karl Hartenstein, who coined the term missio Dei, down to twenty-first century discussions of intercultural hermeneutics. Along the way they reveal advances, mistakes, and changing definitions as German missiologists interacted with the cultural and political realities of their time.
This longitudinal study, showcasing many texts available in English for the first time, tackles the history and dynamics of contextualization head-on and sheds new light on the state of missiology today. We are reminded, Flett and Wrogemann argue, that we must keep working to honor difference within the worldwide Christian community as necessary to the fullness of our being in Christ.

On September 12, 2024, an interfaith dialogue event organized by The International Leadership Training Institute (TILTI) took place in Islamabad (Pakistan). Under the topic „Interfaith Dialogue: Understanding Christianity & Islam (Past, Present & Future)“ Prof. Dr. Navid Jamal Malik (University of Sialkot), Dr. Mufti Anas Rizwan (International Islamic University, Islamabad) and Dr. Muhammad Babur (Exploring Leadership & Learning Theories in Asia) discussed with the Christian representatives Prof. Dr. Detlef Hiller (Internationale Hochschule Liebenzell, IHL) and Prof. Dr. Henning Wrogemann (Wuppertal Church University).
In addition to fundamental perspectives on Islamic and Christian understandings of dialogue, a number of current questions about Christian-Islamic relations in Pakistan were discussed, with the audience of 40 people from various Christian churches and Muslim organizations providing a number of constructive contributions and critical questions. As organizer, Dr. James Liton (founder of TILTI) concluded by emphasizing the importance of Interfaith Dialogue events for the future of Pakistan, as in this way, in addition to important discussions, personal contacts can be made and good relationships can be developed.

Unter dem Thema Interfaith Dialogue: Understanding Christianity & Islam (Past, Present & Future) diskutierten von muslimischer Seite Prof. Dr. Navid Jamal Malik (University of Sialkot), Dr. Mufti Anas Rizwan (International Islamic University, Islamabad) sowie Dr. Muhammad Babur (Exploring Leadership & Learning Theories in Asia) mit den christlichen Vertretern Prof. Dr. Detlef Hiller (Internationale Hochschule Liebenzell, IHL) und Prof. Dr. Henning Wrogemann (Kirchliche Hochschule Wuppertal).
Neben grundsätzlichen Sichtweisen zu islamischen wie christlichen Dialogverständnissen wurde eine Reihe aktueller Fragen zu christlich-islamischen Beziehungen in Pakistan diskutiert, wozu es aus dem Auditorium von 40 Personen verschiedener christlicher Kirchen wie muslimischer Organisationen eine Reihe von konstruktiven Beiträgen und kritischen Rückfragen gab. Als Veranstalter hob Dr. James Liton (Gründer von TILTI) abschließend die Bedeutung von Veranstaltungen zu Interfaith Dialogue für die Zukunft Pakistans hervor, da auf dieser Weise neben den wichtigen Diskussionen auch persönliche Kontakte geknüpft und gute Beziehungen entwickelt werden können.

Im Sommersemester 2024 (April bis Juli) findet an der Protestant University Wuppertal in Kooperation mit der Vereinten Evangelischen Mission (VEM) zum dritten Mal ein International Study Program statt: Sechs Studierende aus Afrika (Tanzania, Ruanda) und Asien (Indonesien, Philippinen, Hongkong) und deutsche Studierende werden an insgesamt 6 englischsprachigen Lehrveranstaltungen teilnehmen. Das Thema lautet: „War and Peace as a Theological and Ecumenical Challenge for the Church“. In einem umfangreichen Exposure-Program werden die Teilnehmenden deutsche kirchliche, diakonische und gesellschaftliche Zusammenhänge kennenlernen und diskutieren.
Das Programm ist ein Beispiel für die Besonderheit der Kirchlichen Hochschule Wuppertal als einer theologischen Fakultät, die (über Forschung und Lehre hinaus) in besonderer Weise durch ihre Campus-Situation, ihrer Nähe zu kirchlichen Lebenswelten in Deutschland und der weltweiten Ökumene und ihrer engen Kooperation mit Organisationen wie der Vereinten Evangelischen Mission (VEM) Theologie, kritische Reflexion, geistliches Leben und ökumenische Gemeinschaft miteinander verbindet.

Aus der großen Menge der weltweit agierenden Ulamā‘ und TV-Prediger sticht der Koran-Prediger Scheich Muḥammad Mutawallī al-Scha‘rāwī mehr als 20 Jahre nach seinem Tod noch immer hervor. Im Westen galt er als moderater Prediger, Kritiker halten ihn für einen Islamisten oder sogar Extremisten. Anhand seiner Predigten werden sein theologischer Standpunkt, seine Mission und sein Weltbild, sein sprachlicher und psychologischer Einfluss in der islamischen Welt ermittelt; er wird als Vorbild wahrgenommen und vielfach zitiert. Seine Ansichten zu Christentum, Judentum, Geschlechterverhältnis zwischen Mann und Frau, Ğihād und Koran-Hermeneutik werden kritisch betrachtet.
The Koran preacher Sheikh Muḥammad Mutawallī al-Scha‘rāwī still stands out from the large number of Ulamā‘ and TV preachers who are active worldwide, more than 20 years after his death. In the West he was considered a moderate preacher, critics consider him an Islamist or even an extremist. Based on his sermons, his theological point of view, his mission and his world view, his linguistic and psychological influence in the Islamic world are determined; he is perceived as a role model and often quoted. His views on Christianity, Judaism, gender relations between men and women, jihad and Koranic hermeneutics are critically examined.

Das Thema lautet: „War and Peace as a Theological and Ecumenical Challenge for the Church“. In einem umfangreichen Exposure-Program werden die Teilnehmenden deutsche kirchliche, diakonische und gesellschaftliche Zusammenhänge kennenlernen und diskutieren.
Das Programm ist ein Beispiel für die Besonderheit der Kirchlichen Hochschule Wuppertal als einer theologischen Fakultät, die (über Forschung und Lehre hinaus) in besonderer Weise durch ihre Campus-Situation, ihrer Nähe zu kirchlichen Lebenswelten in Deutschland und der weltweiten Ökumene und ihrer engen Kooperation mit Organisationen wie der Vereinten Evangelischen Mission (VEM) Theologie, kritische Reflexion, geistliches Leben und ökumenische Gemeinschaft miteinander verbindet.
International Study Program 2024, Wuppertal, Germany – Protestant University Wuppertal & United Evangelical Mission In the summer semester of 2024 (April to July), an International Study Program is taking place for the third time at the Protestant University Wuppertal in cooperation with United Evangelical Mission: six students from Africa (Tanzania, Rwanda) and Asia (Indonesia, Philippines, Hong Kong) along with German students will take part in a total of 5 courses (Old Testament, Systematic Theology, Practical Theology, Ecumenics, Intercultural Theology) taught in English. The theme is: “War and Peace as a Theological and Ecumenical Challenge for the Church”. In an additional extensive exposure program, participants will get to know and discuss German church, diaconal and social contexts. The program is an example of the special nature of the Protestant University of Wuppertal as a theological faculty that is unique (beyond research and teaching) through its campus situation, its proximity to church life in Germany and global ecumenism, and its close cooperation with Organizations such as the United Evangelical Mission (UEM), as it combines theology, critical reflection, spiritual life and ecumenical community.

Christianity is not only a global but also an intercultural phenomenon.
In this third volume of his three-volume Intercultural Theology, Henning Wrogemann proposes that we need to go beyond currently trending theologies of mission to formulate both a theory of interreligious relations and a related but methodologically independent theology of interreligious relations.
Migratory movements are contributing to an ongoing process of religious pluralization in societies that tended to be more religiously homogenous in the past. Interreligious platforms, movements, and organizations are growing in number. Meanwhile, everyday life continues to be characterized by very different modes of interreligious cooperation. Coming to a better understanding of such modes is a major concern for societies with high levels of religious and cultural plurality.
Wrogemann’s conviction is that much would be achieved if we posed new and different questions. When it comes to interreligious relations, what is significant, and what is meaningful? What exactly is a dialogue? Which factors are at play when people from different cultural and religious traditions come into contact with each other as physical beings in real-life situations? What about the different images of the self and of the other? Which interests and hidden motives underlie which claims to validity? On September 12, 2024, an interfaith dialogue event organized by The International Leadership Training Institute (TILTI) took place in Islamabad (Pakistan). Under the topic „Interfaith Dialogue: Understanding Christianity & Islam (Past, Present & Future)“ Prof. Dr. Navid Jamal Malik (University of Sialkot), Dr. Mufti Anas Rizwan (International Islamic University, Islamabad) and Dr. Muhammad Babur (Exploring Leadership & Learning Theories in Asia) discussed with the Christian representatives Prof. Dr. Detlef Hiller (Internationale Hochschule Liebenzell, IHL) and Prof. Dr. Henning Wrogemann (Wuppertal Church University).
In addition to fundamental perspectives on Islamic and Christian understandings of dialogue, a number of current questions about Christian-Islamic relations in Pakistan were discussed, with the audience of 40 people from various Christian churches and Muslim organizations providing a number of constructive contributions and critical questions. As organizer, Dr. James Liton (founder of TILTI) concluded by emphasizing the importance of Interfaith Dialogue events for the future of Pakistan, as in this way, in addition to important discussions, personal contacts can be made and good relationships can be developed.

Neben grundsätzlichen Sichtweisen zu islamischen wie christlichen Dialogverständnissen wurde eine Reihe aktueller Fragen zu christlich-islamischen Beziehungen in Pakistan diskutiert, wozu es aus dem Auditorium von 40 Personen verschiedener christlicher Kirchen wie muslimischer Organisationen eine Reihe von konstruktiven Beiträgen und kritischen Rückfragen gab. Als Veranstalter hob Dr. James Liton (Gründer von TILTI) abschließend die Bedeutung von Veranstaltungen zu Interfaith Dialogue für die Zukunft Pakistans hervor, da auf dieser Weise neben den wichtigen Diskussionen auch persönliche Kontakte geknüpft und gute Beziehungen entwickelt werden können.

Internationale Fachtagung als Kooperation der Kirchlichen Hochschule Wuppertal mit der Universität Zürich
25.-27. November 2022, Zürich
Am 25.-27. November 2022 fand an der Universität Zürich eine internationale Fachtagung zum Thema „Mission in Crisis“ statt. Die Veranstaltung stellt eine Kooperation zwischen dem Lehrstuhl für Religionswissenschaft und Interkulturelle Theologie der Kirchlichen Hochschule Wuppertal (Prof. Dr. Henning Wrogemann) und dem Lehrstuhl für Praktische Theologie der Universität Zürich (Prof. Dr. Ralph Kunz) dar.
Zu den 25 Teilnehmenden zählte neben den Veranstaltern und Promovierenden beider Lehrstühle eine Reihe von Expertinnen aus der Schweiz (PD Dr. Sabrina Müller, Prof. Dr. Stefan Schweyer), Deutschland (Prof. Dr. Philipp Bartholomä, Hans-Hermann Pompe), Österreich (Dr. Patrick Todjeras), den Niederlanden (Prof. Dr. Stefan Paas, Prof. Dr. Henk de Roest, Prof. Dr. Benno van den Toren), Australien (Prof. Dr. John G. Flett) und Großbritannien (Bischof Graham Tomlin).
Mit dem Untertitel „Self-secularization and self-segregation. Limits and Chances of Church Mission in the German-speaking World“ wurde die Thematik auf den Bereich Mitteleuropas fokussiert, jedoch auch um die Perspektiven Australiens und Neuseelands sowie Großbritanniens erweitert. Neben intensiven Diskussionen einer Vielzahl von Vorträgen kamen auch persönliche Begegnungen und geistliche Besinnung nicht zu kurz. Die englischsprachigen Beiträge werden in einem Aufsatzband zugänglich sein, der für das Jahr 2023 vorgesehen ist.
